LUCY
‘A sparkle in the sky’
Rationale
Lucy sparkles in the sky like a diamond high above the city. Her presence seems so obvious, but until now she was just not visible. Her skin is bright white one moment, and the next it radiates light like a diamond.
The frame of Lucy is filled with spinning panels. Bright white on one side, a mirror-surface on the other. The frames are moved/turned by the wind. The dynamics depend on the strength and direction of the wind.
Lucy can be illuminated in various ways. One option is by light units provided by the festival. However, Kinetic Humor can bring up to 4 enormous searchlights from World War II. A combination of these options is possible as well. The searchlights are so-called Carbon Arcs dating from 1942, the brightest lamps man ever made. The intensity of one lamp is equivalent to 800 million candles. During the war they were vital for spotting enemy bombers at night and then shooting them down. Luckily, they now serve only as light art, bringing Lucy to life. Kinetic Humor has renovated and retrofitted these searchlights with green electrics especially for project Lucy.
Lucy looks like a star, but you can almost touch her. A star tailor made for the city skyline. She pokes holes of light in the urban skin and makes her environment and spectators twinkle.
