LARGE PENDULUM WAVE
“A physical phenomenon of astonishing patterns”
Rationale
The pendulum wave has escaped the lab, scaled up to 12 meters and exposed to the elements. The Large Pendulum Wave (lpw) installation brings to life a physical phenomenon. 15 Independent pendulums of different lengths dance with the forces of nature In a mesmerizing sequence that runs for 6 minutes.
To start all pendulums are lifted to a side. When they are released only gravity moves them. Since shorter pendulums swing faster than longer ones, the pendulums don’t stay in line after releasing. In stead they create astonishing patterns: A dance of waves and quasi chaos.
The swinging frequencies are tuned accurately to a mathematical sequence. Moreover, each pendulum features a large bulb with programmable led lighting At the tones of dedicated music compositions, the pendulums perform vibrant light shows enhancing and playing with the patterns.
